My politics class last semester was all over this, but fortunately I think there are too many corporate interests (see: Google) against this to let it really gain any traction. |

Surprisingly there are large internet corporations going against it, that in and of itself should hopefully be enough to stop it. Sadly though, our representatives are all 70+ years old and don't even know what the internet is for (porn). See: Reddit, Riot Games (League of Legends), 4chan, Youtube, Own3d.tv, Twitch.tv This would be an extremely terrible day for youtube and game streamers. Reversal of SOPA in the future would be a half assed, corrupt change and it not passing in the first place is the best for the planet. |

I wouldn't call the corporate resistance surprising. Yes, the large copyright factions like the MPAA and RIAA are going to push for this, but it's companies like Google that will get destroyed by this, so of course they are going to fight like crazy for this. Google owns YouTube and has made it quite profitable over the years. If SOPA is allowed to eliminate the safe harbor clause of the DMCA, they are basically fucked because they can be held liable for anything that their users upload, even if they make all due effort to remove infringing content when found. They would have to instead verify and screen each and every upload to the site. Internet corporations know that they stand to lose from this and will fight against it. Because this is the way things already are, not fledgling start ups pushing for change, the system is entrenched and that much harder to change. Any change we see from piracy legislation will be incremental, at worst. However, by proposing an unrealistic change first, any subsequent, more moderate proposals will seem all the more reasonable by comparison. Which may have been the plan all along. You're very right about Congress being out of touch with technology. That's the biggest problem with putting more restrictions on the Internet, which is that the people writing the regulations don't even understand what it is they are regulating. While they aren't quite all 70+ years old (average age is more in the upper 50's), I think it's very fair to question the understanding they have. There are a lot of very intelligent, well-educated people in Congress but I'm sure we've all seen our share of otherwise intelligent, well-educated people struggle with even the most basic of computer functions. |

The 70+ thing was a joke. But yes. And I didn't actually think it was surprising. I think it's a bit ridiculous that something this dramatic is even proposed. Oh well, not much I can do but write my state government. |

It was either shelved or tossed. Either way, there are things similar to it popping up globally. Guns will be raised soon. And when it comes to that, blanks will not be loaded. |

This particular bill (and the similar one in the Senate) both appear to be dead following the Wikipedia protest. While undoubtedly, the copyright industry will continue to pursue legislation to protect their interests (as they have been for decades), the Internet giants have shown that any attempt on the scale of SOPA is likely to meet stiff resistance. However, I would not be surprised if the industry returns with more modest proposals in the relatively near future. Of course, with election season coming up, you never know what will happen. My guess is neither party wants to risk the controversy at the moment. |
